A HILLINGDON octogenarian has been rewarded for volunteering at Queensmead Sailing Club for half his life.

Bert May was given the long-term commitment to volunteering award at this year's Hillingdon volunteer awards.

The big-hearted 80-year-old has also contributed to Hillingdon Outdoor Activity Centre over a period of more than 40 years.

He was given his award by the mayor at a ceremony at Uxbridge College’s Hayes campus.

Mr May said: “I was very humbled at such a recognition and both certificates are prominent on my wall and the magnificent glass trophy is proudly displayed.

“I had no idea that I had been nominated for an award until I received notification from the volunteer organisers. Even then, I still had no idea if I was to be successful at the award ceremony!”

The team award went to Ed Thirlwall, victim engagement and restorative justice co-ordinator for the Hillingdon Youth Offending Service, who said: “I had training with our wider group on Saturday and they were incredibly uplifted to be recognised.

“I think the positive impact of the award will motivate current volunteers, assist in future recruitment and also be valued by young people and victims.”

Hillingdon Mayor John Cooper said: “It was clear to all that residents of Hillingdon benefit greatly from the people who give up their precious time to help others.

“Without them Hillingdon would be a poorer society.”
