An MP joined Jewish and Hindu hospital volunteers in a special project.

Bob Blackman MP joined with members of Stanmore and Canons Park synagogue and Shree Swaminarayan Temple on Sunday to help replant the rehabilitation gardens at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore.

The event was an early boost ahead of Mitzvah Day, a Jewish-led day of social action to take place on November 19.

Mitzvah Day executive director Dan Rickman, who also took part in the day, said: "The gardens were in a desperate state when the volunteers arrived, and are now completely transformed.

"As we were leaving, visitors and patients were already coming outside to play swingball and enjoy the new scenery.

"This event really was a great example of Mitzvah Day in action and fills us all with inspiration as we approach November 19."

Mr Blackman added: "It was fantastic to take part in this Mitzvah Day partnership and truly rewarding to see volunteers from two local faith communities come together to help clear the gardens for our incredible Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital."

The garden project was also representing the Hindu equivalent of Mitzvah Day, Sewa Day, which was in October.

Mitzvah Day takes place on November 19 across the UK.
