A GP surgery has been rated inadequate by the regulator.

Hendon Way Surgery in Elliot Road, Barnet, was rated inadequate by the Care Quality Commission, following an inspection in October 2017.

Inspectors found there was a risk of harm to patients due to systems and processes not being fully in place, such as managing high risk medicines.

According to the report, there was a lack of clarity around key roles in the practice, poor arrangement for managing uncollected prescriptions, and managing staff training and inductions.

The regulator also said patient satisfaction was significantly below national averages for access to the service and clinical consultations with GPs and nurses.

Acting deputy chief inspector of general practice, Michele Golden, said: "There needs to be major improvements at Hendon Way Surgery to raise the standard of care for patients which is not up to the standard they are entitled to receive.

"The practice has now been placed into special measures and CQC will return to inspect again within six months.

"Special measures will give people who use the service the reassurance that the care they get should improve. The service will be kept under review and if needed could be escalated to urgent enforcement action."

The CQC has said the surgery must establish effective systems and processes and ensure staff receive the appropriate support, training and professional development necessary to carry out their duties.

A spokesman from Hendon Way Surgery said there had been recent staff changes at the time of the inspection, and there were no issues relating to clinical care from doctors to patients.

The spokesman said: "We have never compromised the care and treatment of the patients.

"It is the CQC's responsibility to make sure we are following the guidelines and we accept their evaluation and have sent them everything they need."

The regulator will revisit the surgery and, if everything is as it should be, will inspect them again in the summer to determine the outcome in a new report.

The surgery will be moving to new premises in the next few weeks into West Hendon Broadway.
