University clearing can often be a stressful occasion but prospective students at St Mary’s had a rather welcoming voice on the other end of the phone.

Thousands of students from across the country faced the anxious task of finding out their A-Level results on Thursday, with places in universities dependant on one piece of paper and confirmation of their grades.

For some it was success while others went through clearing to get their place, ringing up universities to find out what options were available in their new-found careers.

Those ringing south west London’s St Mary’s University would have experienced a different call than most however, with singer-songwriter and former student Tom Grennan on hand to offer advice and support to those going through a busy day.

“I graduated two years ago studying physical theatre, I’m from a small town and it was nice to come to a place in St Mary’s that was like that,” said Grennan, whose debut album Lighting Matches reached No.5 in the charts.

“As soon you have those first two weeks of Freshers, everyone knows who you are – they all want to make friends and are here for the same reason.

“I loved my course at St Mary’s, I was in an environment of learning, making friends and having that community in the theatre world – people drag you through to have a good time.

Hillingdon Times:

“My album came out and went straight to No.5 – it still blows my mind. I’ve been meeting people, doing shows I never thought I would do and I’m signing a record deal in America.

“I wouldn’t be doing what I am if I hadn’t come to university, especially here. I had those three years to learn about myself, leave the nest and so it’s so important to be able to do that.

“Now I want to be able to inspire other people who have got their grades to come to university – you’ll enjoy it, I guarantee that.”
