A study has revealed the worst affected places to live and work in after Brexit.

Watford will be the fourth worst affected part of the UK by Brexit according to a study by The London School of Economics.

The town comes in just below the City of London, Aberdeen and Tower Hamlets in terms of how badly it will be affected by Brexit.

The study predicts there would be a 3.5 per cent drop in the local economy if businesses start to leave post Brexit.

Some of Watford’s largest employers include department store, TJX, and service company, KPMG, which are European based companies.

Cllr for Callowland, Ian Stotesbury said: “I think this really brings home the damaging impact that this government’s handling of the Brexit process could have on our town and surrounding areas.

“Back in June 2016, people voted for a whole host of reasons, but I am convinced that no one voted in Watford to be poorer and since that vote the direction the British public gave has been mischaracterised and distorted.

“Businesses, especially in our town centre, rely on a good trading relationship with Europe.

“The Brexit deal, good or bad, risks local jobs and will hurt Watford and the surrounding area.

“At the moment, it’s only the Liberal Democrats who are united when it comes to Brexit.

“We have been clear - we need a genuine People’s Vote on the final Brexit deal.

“Richard Harrington should be representing the best interests of our town first and join Liberal Democrats and other Conservative MP’s in calling for a People’s Vote on any Final Deal in Parliament."

Watford MP Richard Harrington campaigned to remain during the referendum but has towed the party line over the UK's exit.

When asked previously by the Watford Observer about his position on Brexit in recent weeks he said: “Most people know that I campaigned for Britain to remain part of the European Union.

“I did so because I believed it was the best way to protect jobs and maintain our security.

“My view has always been that, with the decision having been made, we must now ensure business as usual for companies in Watford.

“The Prime Minister has my full support to lead us out of the EU because I believe that her Chequers proposal does just that.

“She has presented a fair compromise which ensures our economy can continue to grow outside the EU.”
