A new sports arena complete with three full-sized tennis courts, table-tennis tables, and a small clubhouse has opened.

The courts at Manor House Grounds in Abbots Langley has undergone refurbishment and is now ready for members of the public to use.

Alongside the new courts is a seating area as well as a clubhouse for Abbots Langley Tennis Club, which will run a programme for children, teenagers, and adults.

The work was made possible thanks to investment from Three Rivers District Council (TRDC), Abbots Langley Parish Council, Watford Community Housing, YC Hertfordshire, and the tennis club.

Section 106 money, cash TRDC receives from developers, was contributed to the project.

The courts will remain free outside of the community club programme where sessions will be subject to a fee.

A new skate park could also be created at Manor House Grounds. It will go to a planning committee meeting this month and if approved, work will begin in early 2019.

Chairman of Three Rivers District Council, Cllr Phil Williams, said: “I am a huge advocate and passionate about community sport and following the investment from TRDC and its partners it’s great to be able to open this facility up to the public. The new courts look fantastic, and I’m excited to see them be used again.”

Brenda Kersey, chairman of Abbots Langley Parish Council, added: “The Manor House playing fields are a huge asset for the whole parish, and it is satisfying to see the facilities brought bang up to date. We already have the new play area.

“Today we add these excellent tennis courts and multi-use games area, and we have a splendid new skate park to follow. All the improvements will attract more residents of all age groups to the park, contributing to their health and wellbeing.”
