Harrow Council has been nominated for an award for its commemoration of the Bosnian genocide.
It is up for charity Remembering Srebrenica’s ‘community champions’ prize in recognition of its commitment to honouring those who were killed in Srebrenica in 1995.
This year, on the anniversary of the event, the council organised a flag-raising ceremony outside the civic centre, which was attended by several councillors, the council’s interim chief executive and MP Bob Blackman.
Cllr Sue Anderson, responsible for community engagement and accessibility at Harrow Council, has played a role in ensuring the victims are remembered.
She recently visited the site of the atrocity – where more than 8,000 Bosnian Muslims were murdered – and frequently speaks about her experiences there.
At a full council meeting in July, she said: “We must continue to remember Srebrenica, as it will promote community cohesion, bring people together and, hopefully, lessons will be learnt.”
The awards ceremony, organised by Remembering Srebrenica, takes place on Thursday in Bayswater.
