A struggling foodbank received a welcome boost last week when a group of businesses delivered almost a “metric tonne” of supplies to its main warehouse.

Representatives of Clarendon Road Collects, a group determined to ensure Watford Foodbank receives a steady stream of provisions, delivered the haul to Imperial Way on Friday afternoon.

The charity drive, orchestrated by Watford and West Herts Chamber of Commerce chief executive, Chris Luff, was started in response to startling revelations the foodbank had seen its client base double in a year.

The Watford Observer newspaper, along with partners of the Chamber, Watford Community Housing, VWV Solicitors, KPMG, Engage Partners, TJX Companies and Citibase all made vital food donations.

Mr Luff also thanked Blue Box Storage and Hirus Vehicles for their support and MET Coaches for their cash donation.

Mr Luff said: “It was brilliant. We delivered a metric tonne to the foodbank which was amazing.

“I think one of the things that is really important about this scheme is that we support the charity that delivers this service and the Trussell Trust that supports them.”

Andrew Tranter, trustee and manager of the foodbank, told this newspaper Universal Credit has contributed to a spike in demand in the town.

“The reason is Universal Credit. It caused problems for people who faced weeks without pay and we are still suffering. It had a marked impact on our food stores.”

Speaking about the donation on Friday, Mr Tranter added: “This is a great response. We knew they were doing the collection along Clarendon Road, but this is just fantastic.”

Mr Tranter also said the foodbank had been approached by Heart Radio as a result of the campaign and Garston Fire Brigade had even dropped by in recent weeks to help them carry heavy boxes up to their first floor. He said: “The fire brigade is a fantastic team.”

Other organisations involved in the scheme include Watford and Three Rivers Trust, St John’s School, The Princes Trust, Sarratt Office Supplies and Watford Football Club.
