Thames Water is carrying out emergency repairs after discovering a collapsed sewer in Watford.
Traffic signals are in place on the A412 St Albans Road with Regent Street while repairs are being made.
Regent Street is closed and work is expected to be completed within the next "two to three weeks", according to the water and waste management company.
Motorists should expect some disruption to their journey while engineers work "extended hours, seven days a week".
Michael Wells, field operations manager at Thames Water, said: “It’s a regrettable time of year to have to do this work and we’re sorry for the traffic delays we know it will cause, but it’s necessary to avoid the sewer flooding and causing distress to our customers in the lead up to Christmas.
"We’re in regular contact with Hertfordshire County Council to ensure any disruption is kept to a minimum, and we’re working flat out to get everything back to normal as soon as possible.”
