People have voted for a stronger say over the types of building developments in their village.

A referendum was held in Croxley Green last Thursday about the parish council's neighbourhood plan.

Over 3,000 residents voted in the referendum which allows councillors to have their say over building projects in Croxley Green.

Chris Mitchell has been one of the councillors working for five years on drawing up the Neighbourhood Plan.

Cllr Mitchell said: “This is fantastic it gives the council more clout to have its say and steer developments into where we want them to be.

“There have been a few projects that have been granted which under this new plan would most probably not been accepted.

“For example, we can now be sure that projects are being built on brownfield sites and protect the green belt, which is great because we have a lovely village and its close to London and keeps its character.”

After the referendum it was revealed the turnout of Croxley Green was at 25 per cent and of that figure, 93 per cent of residents voted in favour of the Neighbourhood Plan.

Now the plan is approved, the council has the ability to protect the architectural heritage and local character of the village.

Parish chairman, Mark Saxon, said in a tweet: “My heartfelt thanks to all involved in this project. To our councillors, ex councillors, council staff and all our community groups and of course the voters of Croxley. Over 25 per cent turn out is a fantastic result.”

Councillor Emily Benner said on Twitter: “Absolutely fantastic news to start the weekend.

"Excited for an incredible future for #CroxleyGreen and pleased to have had such a majority vote.

"Well done to all involved over the last five years to get to this stage #proud”
