MORE than 50 people will be running or walking up to half-marathon distance (13 miles) this Sunday from West Harrow to Ruislip Lido, to help slum children in India.

The fund-raising effort was prompted last summer when Wendy Petersen went to Dharavi, Mumbai, where she saw youngsters who don’t have access to the kind of school classrooms we take for granted.

She said: “As a technology educator for more than 20 years, I knew I could help the children there in some way. That’s where the idea for Donate4Dharavi came from.”

What started off as just a few friends getting together to do a small charity run has now expanded to people taking part of all ages and abilities.

They will be joined at different points by people, who will run a short distance and then meet up at the finish line.

The Water’s Edge pub at Ruislip Lido will be the venue for the end-of-race celebrations .

Among those who have helped Wendy organise the event include Nayan Patel, of Northwood Rotary Club, and Charlotte Watkins, fund-raising director of the Indian charity, Reality Gives.

The original target of £500 has already been smashed and Cityhub have agreed to match-fund the efforts of runners and their supporters.

Wendy will be going back to India in February to deliver some digital microscopes and graphics tablets to the school.
