A man has been jailed for 28 weeks for shoplifting, assault and criminal damage.

Stephen Hardwick, 51, of Croxley View, was charged with three counts of theft from a shop, actual bodily harm and criminal damage – he pleaded guilty at Hatfield Remand Court on January 29 and was also dealt with for breaching a suspended sentence.

On August 19 last year, Hardwick entered the Co-op in Silk Mill Way, Tring, and stole refrigerated meat worth £79.

The following day he returned to the same shop on two occasions, just minutes apart, and both times he stole more meat worth around £68.

On October 10, he stole more items from the Waitrose in Homestead Road, Rickmansworth.

Once outside, Hardwick was confronted by shop security who took him back to the manager’s office where he asked to go to the toilet and caused damage inside one of the cubicles. He then attacked a male member of staff.

In addition to his sentence, Hardwick must pay £200 in compensation the Waitrose staff member.
