Travelodge has identified Watford as one of a number of towns it is looking to build new hotels in.

The chain, which already has a branch in Market Street in the town centre, has pinpointed ten key commuter towns to build new sites, close to railway stations.

Watford is among these ten towns – and comes at a time when ambitious plans of redevelopment around Watford Junction were revealed.

A new hotel in Watford would create around 30 jobs and represent an investment of around £5 million.

Travelodge also remain interested in launching in Radlett – although it is not in the list of ten.

A campaign took place to prevent an application to build a Travelodge and mini-supermarket in Newberries car park in the village. Councillors at Hertsmere Borough Council joined the campaign to oppose the plans.

However, a spokeswoman for Travelodge has told the Watford Observer that the company is “still looking” for a site in Radlett.

The other towns listed by Travelodge are Stevenage, Ware, Broxbourne, Reading, Tonbridge, Gillingham, Haywards Heath, Maidstone, and Shoreham.

Tony O’Brien, Travelodge UK Property Director said: “We want to open hotels by railway stations in key commuter towns across the south east that have a fast service into London. These towns are important business locations in their own right and are growing at pace and attracting businesses of all sizes.

“They are also a magnet for savvy travellers who are seeking low cost accommodation and don’t mind travelling into the capital.

“Collectively this expansion would represent an investment of £60 million for third party investors and create around 300 new jobs.”
