A son who supported his mother while she battled a life-limiting illness is taking on a hiking challenge in aid of the charity that cared for her.

Glenn Connolly will be walking the Dales Way over five days to raise money for Kenton-based St Luke’s Hospice.

Mr Connolly became involved with the charity after his mother, Kathleen Connolly, was admitted.

He said: “The week we spent at St Luke’s Hospice was a complete blur, but thanks to the team at St Luke’s we were able to get mum admitted at just the right time.

"Mum was in the hospice for four days and those four days were much needed for all of us.

"St Luke’s was where mum wanted to be and that was important for all of us."

St Luke’s looks after people with cancer and other serious progressive illnesses, such as motor neurone disease and heart, lung and kidney failure. It costs more than £3 million a year to keep it open.

Mr Connolly heard about the hospice's annual walk in 2018, joined training walks and began fundraising.

He managed to raise just over £2,000.

He added: “I couldn’t believe the response and was able to raise far more than I thought I would.

"The walk itself was brilliant, the whole experience was fantastic.”

The walk takes place from May 24 to 28. Walkers stay together in historic 19th Century country house, Newfield Hall, complete with heated indoor pool, lounge, bar and boot room. Each day there are two route options: 15 to18 miles or a shorter option of 7 to 12 miles daily.

Transport, full board of cooked breakfast, picnic lunch and three-course dinners is included.
