Fans of the popular television series Game of Thrones may notice a new sign unveiled today renaming the county after one of the shows landmarks.

The sign which is based outside Colchester Castle, states that Essex will be known as ‘Essos’ in honour of the digital download release of the season finale.

Three other regions across the nation have also pledged their allegiance and transformed into the world of Westeros and are encouraging fans to find them.

The following signs which have also been unveiled to the public today are:

• Highgarden – formerly known as Covent Garden, London

• Castle Black-pool – formerly known as Blackpool

• Winterfell – formerly known as Doune Castle, Stirlingshire, Scotland

Lisa Bone from Visit Essex comments: “Visit Essex is so excited and proud to be linked with one of the biggest shows ever in history.

“We have fully embraced the Game of Thrones takeover of Essex, now named Essos and to have a visible connection to the show outside one of our most iconic attractions, Colchester Castle in Britain's first city, is a huge opportunity.

“We look forward to welcoming visitors from far and wide to see it.”

The popular series which premiered on HBO back in 2011 aired its final episode in the UK last night to millions of fans.

Fans around the UK will have the whole summer to find the signs and are being asked to post a selfie on social media, tagging @HBO_UK and the hashtag #GoTTakeover.

Game of Thrones: The Final Season franchise is available via Digital Download now through selected retailers.
