A BOTTLE of wine sold to a child of 14 landed the director of The Wine Cellar in Station Road, West Drayton, in Uxbridge Magistrates' Court.

Sandeep Singh Nangpal was charged with allowing a member of staff to sell alcohol to a person under 18.

The child was assisting in a joint under-age sales purchase operation, conducted by Hillingdon's trading standards team and the police.

The child was not asked his or her age or to show identification at the time.

The court heard how the shop had previously been caught during a similar operation last July.

Nangpal, director and licence holder, was fined £660, with a victim surcharge of £66 and costs of £501.16.

The same level of fine, surcharge and costs were also imposed directly on the business, trading as West Drayton Local.

Cllr Douglas Mills, the council's cabinet spokesman, said: “Selling alcohol to children seriously effects their health and wellbeing, can lead to anti-social behaviour and impacts negatively on local communities.

“We will not tolerate businesses that break the law and neglect their responsibilities to the children and communities of our borough.”
