Allow me to pose an open question to our MP Richard Harrington and his colleagues in government: Would any one of them be happy to make a home in a property with tiny rooms and no windows? This is what one developer, Imran Dhanji, is offering and the Government endorsing (Welcome to the flats with no windows, Watford Observer, July 19) even though it goes totally against the minimum standards for living accommodation set by Watford Borough Council.

I think we can all predict the answer

So why on earth has planning inspector Steve Rennie overturned the very sensible and correct decision taken by the council’s Development Management Committee?

Rennie contends that the development meets the requirement of the general permitted development order (GDPO). Really?

So perhaps Mr Harrington can confirm that GDPO was designed specifically to allow developers to bypass the minimum standards pertaining to quality of living accommodation for humans which covers the living space, light, amenities etc?

If that is not the case then he can do two things to help his constituents in Watford.

Firstly get the Minster to call in this perverse ruling by the Planning Inspector.

Secondly ask the Government to review and revise the GDPO rules and close this gaping loophole which seemingly makes it OK for the future homes to be chicken coops.
