BUSINESSES and schools are making a new pledge to help reduce the amount of plastic the town uses.

As part of a campaign to reduce the amount of plastic we use, people in Blackburn with Darwen are being urged to get involved and join in by using the hashtag #plasticfreebwd

A live blog day at Bangor Community Centre, from 1.30pm tomorrow (Thursday), will showcase all the work people have been doing in the community.

Members of the Blackburn Women’s Group have been working hard to create plastic stools and planters for gardens.

Students at Darwen Aldridge Community Centre have launched plastic-free business ideas such as biodegradable phone cases for sale.

Businesses will also show the inspiring ways they are reducing their plastic usage.

Senator Group, a furniture recycling centre in Blackburn will talk about how they recycle plastic and Simpsons Farm Dairies will detail their plastic-free milk bottle deliveries in Blackburn.

Over the summer months, plastic can be seen all over the town, outside bins, in homes, in parks and near water reserves.

During the #plasticfreebwd campaign, the plan is to get people in the town to understand what happens with their plastic, why we should use less, and how to find substitutes for common plastic items.

Blackburn-based The Furniture Recycling Group will also debunk the most common recycling myths, which will help the community tackle the issue.

To get involved, please e mail alima.nadeem@nqnw.co.uk with pictures of plastic around you, or with new ideas on what you would like to do to help the plastic-free project.
