Music lovers raised more than £1,000 in memory of a college lecturer who died while mountaineering in Scotland.

West Herts College lecturer Ian Bell, 60, lost his life while walking on Ben Nevis in August 2015.

His family held a collection in for Lochaber Mountain Rescue during Scottish pop legends the Proclaimers' performance at Watford Colosseum on Friday.

In tribute to the father of two, Proclaimers brothers Craig and Charlie Reid dedicated their song Sunshine on Leith to Ian and his sons Oscar and Louie.

Ian’s widow, Julia, said: “People were so kind with their donations and support.

“I wish to thank everyone for helping us to raise such a huge amount of money.

“Ian was always aware of his Scottish roots and was proud of his Glaswegian family and the Highlands and was also a huge fan of the Proclaimers.

“As a family we had a memorable time seeing the Proclaimers perform in London many years ago. It felt appropriate to try and raise money at this event. We were so appreciative when the Proclaimers agreed to the collection.

“We wish to thank the Colosseum and the Proclaimers for giving us this chance to raise funds for Lochaber Mountain Rescue. The Colosseum staff and volunteers were exceptional with their warmth and welcome.”

Every year Ian’s family raise funds for Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team, who searched for Mr Bell when he went missing.

Their fundraising has included two back garden festivals ‘IanFest’, a collection at the Rex Cinema in Berkhamsted and a series of musical gatherings in the family home.

In 2017, the family travelled to Lochaber to meet the rescue team.

Julia said: “They are an incredible group of volunteers who are integral to the safety of the 150,000 or more people who walk to the summit of Ben Nevis annually.

“We will never forget them.”
