LIBERAL Democrats say a national petition demanding that Brexit is abandoned has been signed by more than 11,000 Watford residents.

But Watford’s Brexit Party candidate has said any attempt to overturn the result of the 2016 referendum is undemocratic.

The petition, on the Parliamentary website, closed on Tuesday with 6,102,500 signatures, with 11,105 from Watford.

Supporters say the petition has received more support than any other since the system of public petitions was introduced in 2006.

The Liberal Democrat Parliamentary candidate for Watford, Cllr Ian Stotesbury, wants to Stop Brexit.

He said: “Brexit would do enormous harm to Watford and our country. I am not surprised that this petition has received so much support. Lots of people are fed up with Boris Johnson and his reckless approach to Brexit.

“The British public deserves so much better than this mess. I want us to work with other European countries so that our country is stronger, safer and more prosperous.

“Since the 2016 referendum we have seen more and more evidence of the many problems Brexit will cause. With lots of international businesses having their European headquarters here, Watford would be particularly badly hit.

“We must let people have the final say - do we want Boris’s Brexit or to remain in the EU?”

But Brexit Party candidate William Berry says such online polls can be easily manipulated by people creating multiple email addresses and accounts.

He said: “In the vote that mattered —the referendum — Watford voted 50.3 per cent in favour of Leave. This latest attempt to overturn democracy by the Liberal Democrats shows that they should be called the Liberal Undemocrats.

“Brexit will be great for Watford for many reasons: We will have more money for Watford (out of the £9 billion a year we give the EU).

“This might bring the new hospital we need.

“We will be able to strike better trade deals as the EU limits our ability for trade because they are negotiating on behalf of 28 countries. Once out we will find it easier to do trade deals, especially in services

“We will have a democratic country for our children, not ruled over by a foreign undemocratic organisation that has unsustainable debts and a high risk of bankruptcy during the next recession.”
