An unusual fly-tipping of asbestos roofing has left large amounts scattered outside a house.

Watford Borough Council is appealing for help to find the culprits of a fly-tip of bonded asbestos roofing sheets in Orchard Close, Watford, on September 13 between 8:40am and 9:30am.

CCTV footage and witnesses have led the council to believe a white Ford tipper truck which was in the area at the time may be responsible for the dumping.

Ben Wilkin, environmental crime officer, said: “This fly-tip is significant and unusual for Watford. This occurred whilst the residents were away from their home. It is in such a residential area we are hoping someone remembers something.”

People with unwanted large items are advised to take the items to their nearest recycling centre. Waste collection can be organised with Veolia, a waste management service, or with a licensed waste carrier.

Elected Mayor of Watford Peter Taylor said: “Fly-tipping is illegal, and we will take immediate action against people who think they can get away with it. Our residents are really concerned when they see dumped rubbish polluting our communities.

“It harms our environment, attracts vermin and can be a health hazard. It costs the council many thousands of pounds a year to clear up, meaning residents are paying to dispose of other people’s unwanted rubbish.”
