A bus company has donated hundreds of pounds to help pay for the care of a two-year-old boy.

Oscar Connor, from Rickmansworth, was born without a tibia bone in both legs and has had both of his knees amputated.

After Arriva launched its Community Fund Project, it donated £500 to Oscar’s charity fund to help pay for the care he needs.

A cheque was officially presented to Oscar and his family at Watford Junction on Friday, October 4, where a bus named after him was also unveiled.

A further £574 was also raised for Oscar through a raffle hosted by Arriva bus drivers and a barbecue.

Scott O’Neill, general manager for Arriva Hemel Hempstead, said: “We wanted to help out as much as we could, and we hope this money can be used to make a real difference.

“We were delighted when we found out that Oscar had been chosen. It’s great that we have been able to do something positive for the local community and give back to such a worthy cause.”

Oscar has already had eight bowel operations and struggles to eat or drink normally, being drip fed for 14 hours a day.

Although much of Oscar’s treatment is covered on the NHS, there are still additional costs that the family needs help with.

A JustGiving page set up by the family has seen more than £11,000 in donations from the local community to give Oscar a chance of walking in the future.

Oscar’s parents hope to put all donations towards an adapted bath and bed, so that he is able to become more independent.

Craig Taylor, marketing manager for Arriva, said: “Our community funding initiative is a great way of rewarding those people and organisations that go the extra mile, and also helping out those in need.”

“Oscar is a lovely, brave boy whose story has touched many people across the local area, and we’re extremely pleased to have been able to support his fight.”

Speaking to the Observer in 2018, Oscar’s mum, Kayleigh Watson, said: “Because he had a fixed knee, which means they don’t bend, the only way for him to have a better life was to have the amputation.

“Even though I find it very sad, I also find it very positive because of all the friends and support we have received.

“I think it will make Oscar a better person. We have made him a memory box for when he is grown up.”
