Permission has been granted for a mezzanine floor in a retail warehouse in Watford – paving the way for a new TK Maxx store.

TK Maxx's current store in St Albans Road has been earmarked for redevelopment so it needed to find a new site in the town.

Now it looks like T Maxx may be a step closer to moving to an empty unit, formerly PC World, in Century Park, Dalton Way  – after councillors gave the green light to a new mezzanine floor.

According to the report to the council’s development management committee, the application for the mezzanine is designed to seek the necessary planning permission that would allow TK Maxx to occupy the premises.

That addition of the mezzanine will increase the retail floor space by 895 square metres to 2870 square metres – broadly the same as TK Maxx’s existing store at St Albans Retail Park.

The additional space will be used for the sale of clothing and shoes.

In addition to the new mezzanine, the application also seeks permission to sell food goods – to include food gifts, confectionery and other associated items – from a small part of the store, measuring up to five per cent of the retail space.

The report says the Century Park site is the most preferable for the TK Maxx development, fitting with the National Planning Policy Framework and Watford’s Core Strategy.

TK Maxx has its headquarters in Watford and a new £70 million head office is being built opposite Watford Junction.
