SHROPSHIRE Council's deputy leader says the process to remove travellers from the car park at the old Morrisons site in Oswestry has begun.

Travellers were seen occupying the car park in Station Road on Thursday after the supermarket vacated the premises on Wednesday, moving to its new site in Shrewsbury Road.

Councillor Steve Charmley, who represents Whittington, said Shropshire Council were aware of the situation and an eviction process would be started.

"I passed pictures onto officers at Shropshire Council yesterday," said Cllr Charmley.

"We're working through the process now and eviction notices will be served on them. That process takes a least 24 hours to go through.

"After that's gone through, a clean up process will be put in place and the site will be secured to prevent it happening again."

Sarah Green, Shropshire Council’s gypsy and travellers support officer, said: “The team are aware of the group at the old Morrisons.

"Notices have been served today, which expire at 3pm on Monday, October 21.

"The group have advised us that they are on their way to a wedding and intend to vacate by the end of the weekend.”
