A HILLINGDON councillor has won a national award for her work in the community.
Janet Gardner received the Councillor Achievement Award for Innovation and Service Transformation, presented by the Local Government Information Unit in association with specialist fund manager CCLA.
Cllr Gardner, a Labour member for Botwell ward in Hayes, has been a vocal defender of domestic violence victims since 1994, when she was first elected.
She established the Domestic Violence Forum, which elevated the political priority of the problem and transformed attitudes towards domestic violence.
The judges acknowledged the transformation of attitudes towards this crime in Hillingdon, creating an environment in which victims felt able to approach the authorities.
