AN Ealing woman is shortlisted for an RNIB See Differently Award for her efforts to dispel common misconceptions on visual impairment.
Amy Kavanagh, who was born with a rare form of albinism that mainly affects vision, in named in the Campaigner of the Year category.
Dr Kavanagh started a hashtag campaign #JustAskDontGrab on social media following a series of negative incidents she experienced when she started using a white cane.
It resonated with blind and partially-sighted people and gained momentum.

Dr Kavanagh now has a Twitter following of 12,500, as well as a blog with regular posts and guest writers, aiming to challenge perceptions. She has been featured in national media and has even been quoted in the House of Commons.
She said: “My passion is educating people about living with low vision and it’s really overwhelming to have my campaigning work recognised.”
Award winners will be announced at a ceremony at the Glaziers Hall, London Bridge, on November 26.
