Extinction Rebellion campaigners were out in force in St Albans city centre on Saturday.

The group were hunting for support for a petition against the proposed expansion of London Luton Airport.

The airport wants to create a second terminal and increase passenger numbers to 32 million a year.

But campaigners are fearful of what impact an expansion would have on the environment, particularly at times where councils up and down the country, include St Albans District Council, have declared climate emergency.

Dressed in orange and some as air marshals, around 20 campaigners with placards and banners, moved along St Peter's Street spreading their message about the expansion.

Speaking in the city centre on Saturday, Claire Miles said: "We're collecting signatures to petition to stop the expansion. It's about getting enough people together to stop these things getting put into motion and it's important to stop it quickly.

"It's been really good here today. I've been really amazed at how many have been signing (the petition).

"There is a general problem of air pollution. It can cause respiratory problems and and affect local habitats."

Julien Gannon was also out petitioning.

He said: "The reception has been very positive. Everyone I have asked has been against it. The airport does bring jobs to the area but we should look ahead. Look at the future rather than the immediate.

"People in St Albans and Harpenden will suffer long-term with the noise. And there will more cars on the roads too. More CO2 emissions from cars and planes. Long term, this isn't good for the environment.

"We need to be investing in green energy and not increasing the frequency of flights."

London Luton Airport Ltd (LLAL) says some of the feedback during consultation has referred to noise and the environment.

Graham Olver, corporate director at LLAL said: "We envisage a number of mitigations for the environmental impact, including the infrastructure of the new terminal being net-zero carbon, plus ground fleets switching to zero or low-carbon and the provision of clean electric standing power to aircraft.

"In addition we have a target of 45 per cent of all passengers using public transport to get to the airport.

"LLAL is keen to hear the views of as many people as possible and would encourage people to attend one of its remaining six consultation events or complete the survey at https://futureluton.llal.org.uk."
