The hectic nature of a General Election can make it hard to follow how you can actually vote, so here is a breakdown on what to do during the day.

A total of 73,721 people in the St Albans constituency, and 76,321 in the Hitchin and Harpenden constituency, are eligible to vote on Thursday (December 12).

While the deadline to register to vote on November 26 has passed, here is what registered voters can do on the day.

Where can I vote?

There are 51 polling stations in the St Albans constituency and 60 polling stations in the Hitchin and Harpenden constituency.

You can only vote at the polling station stated on your poll card which would be sent to your registered address.

Four usual polling stations have changed. These include:

• St Peter’s School, St Albans, is replaced by the Methodist Church Hall on Marlborough Road.

• Aboyne Lodge School, St Albans, is replaced by the Jubilee Centre, Catherine Street.

• St Michael’s Memorial hall is replaced by a mobile polling station at the Verulamium Museum car park.

• The United Reformed Church in West Riding, Bricket Wood, is replaced by St Luke’s Church, The Crescent, Bricket Wood.

Poll cards have been sent to voters affected by the changes of the new venues.

If you do not have your poll card on you, do not worry as you still will be able to vote. You will just need to tell the polling station staff your name and address so they can clarify if you are registered.

If you are disabled, you can ask the polling station staff to mark the ballot paper.

To find a full list of the polling stations available, visit the Council website here.

What if I can’t make it to a vote?

There is always the option of a proxy vote.

A proxy vote is where someone votes on someone else’s behalf, the deadline for this was on December 4, however it is still possible to apply for an emergency proxy vote until 5pm on the actual polling day by contacting the Council’s electoral services team.

Normally a proxy vote is a useful option if a voter is ill or has a legitimate reason on why they are unable to attend to a polling station.

The Electoral Services team can be contacted on 01727 819294 or through email on elections@stalbans.gov.uk

Where are votes counted?

The count for both constituencies will take place at the Batchwood Sports Centre, St Albans, after the polls close at 10pm.

There is not a definite time on when the results will be declared, but it is likely to be any time after 3.30am on December 13.
