Fly-tippers were fined £100 each as part of council trial aimed at cleaning up an area blighted by rubbish dumping.

Harrow Council’s enforcement teams caught 21 households, including some businesses, illegally dumping waste in Wealdstone.

Officers found raw meat, dental products, food waste and heaps of cardboard among the rubbish.

Cllr Varsha Parmar, responsible for the environment at Harrow Council, said: “Like our residents, it makes me so angry that the taxpayer has to foot the bill to clear up after these disgusting people blighting the borough.

“Fly-tipping isn’t just anti-social, it’s filthy. If you make our borough dirty, then you pay the consequences.

“We’re not just stopping here; we will continue to come after people who make our borough dirty and we’ll soon be targeting our other hotspot areas.

“If you see a fly-tip or someone dumping waste illegally report it to us online.”

It is part of a wider campaign to improve Wealdstone, which is viewed as a problem area when it comes to fly-tipping.

Earlier this year, it worked alongside contractor JB Riney and local traders to provide Sam’s chicken shop with a new padlocked bin.

It came after multiple bags of rubbish from the takeaway built-up on the pavement, which encouraged others to add to the pile.

A spokesman for Harrow Council said: “Excess waste has been an ongoing issue for this area – and we too want to see these issues resolved.

“We will continue to monitor the area and take the necessary actions against anyone blighting our streets.”

He added that shops have been given trade waste bags to help contain rubbish and more businesses have signed up to the council’s trade waste collection service.
