Brent Council is reminding EU nationals to apply for the Government’s settlement scheme as the proposed Brexit date approaches.

It posted cards across the borough urging people to “act now” to prepare for the UK’s exit from the European Union, which is scheduled for January 31.

Cllr Neil Nerva, who represents Queens Park ward, said it was “tragic and beyond sad” that this was the current situation, but advised affected people to “check their rights” and contact their MPs if there are any issues.

Residents who successfully register for the settlement scheme, which requires ID and proof of residence, will maintain the rights they have now.

EU nationals, those from the European Economic Area and Swiss nationals must apply, even if they have permanent residency in the UK. Those with ‘indefinite leave to remain’ or Irish citizenship need not apply.

At 66,000, Brent has the highest number of EU nationals in London – but the council reminded residents that Brexit is likely to affect almost everyone living and working in the borough.

It has carried out a series of measures to help prepare for the possibility of a no deal Brexit, which could still happen at the end of the month.

In December, the Government backed prime minister Boris Johnson’s plan to leave the EU on January 31 with the withdrawal agreement now subject to further parliamentary scrutiny.
