New fire safety doors will be fitted in council homes in blocks of three storeys in the wake of the Grenfell Tower tragedy.
Harrow Council plans to spend more than £500,000 to replace more than 1,000 front doors across its housing stock.
Cllr Philip O’Dell, responsible for housing at Harrow Council, explained that it was part of a “multi-faced approach to fire safety” in the borough that is “necessary” following the disaster at Grenfell in 2017.
He noted that resident safety is a priority for the council and that it was important to update safety measures wherever possible.
The new flat doors will be at FD30 standard, which offer a minimum of 30 minutes protection from smoke and fire.
They are also ‘self-closer’ doors, which prevents the spread of fire and serve to protect communal areas and escape routes.
The council is currently installing new doors across four-storey housing blocks and will move to those in three storeys upon completion before addressing two-storey homes.
Cllr Graham Henson, leader of Harrow Council, said he “welcomed an upgrade” to the doors, which will offer “better protection” to Harrow residents.
