Long-term roadworks in one of Watford's major roads is well underway.

Commuters and visitors should expect delays with part of Clarendon Road, near Watford Junction, running in just one direction.

For the next 10 months, Clarendon Road is closed southbound between St John's Road and Beechen Grove - which affects drivers travelling from the station to the town centre.

Instead, motorists are being diverted down Station Road to St Albans Road.

The road is now littered with cones and barriers to allow the traffic to be controlled and to keep the street as safe as possible for both pedestrians and workers.

The current work in Clarendon Road is the third phase of a transformative programme, designed to create a safe and pedestrian-friendly environment as well as improve the look and feel of the street.

The main focus of the work is reducing the road’s width, creation of a new drainage network, raised tables for better disabled access and a new zebra crossing. Further improvements will take place up to autumn 2022.

Elected Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor, said: "Working together with local businesses and Hertfordshire LEP, we’ve been able to transform a key entrance to our town which is used by millions of people every year. I know this will cause disruption to residents and this will be inconvenient, but hopefully the end result will be worth it."

For bus passengers, the northbound bus stops in Clarendon Road will be closed and southbound buses will be diverted. Temporary stops will be used.

The first phase of the improvements focused on The Parade and Beechen Grove, while the second phase saw improvement to the junction of Clarendon Road and Beechen Grove - including resurfaced road and footways, upgrading the traffic lights, and tree planting.
