A GRADE II listed former manor house in Harlington High Street, which has weathered many storms in its 500-year history, is going up for sale at auction.

Dower House, built in the 16th Century, most recently survived significant fire damage.

It is being offered to market by John Pye Property, with hopes that a history buff will bring it back to life.

Richard Reed, head of property at John Pye, said: “In its heyday, Dower House boasted a 16th Century chimney, a timber frame structure and a stunning 18th century redbrick exterior.

“Thankfully, the property has been partially saved from fire damage with watertight measures put in place and a temporary roof installed, but it does need a history lover with an eye for restoration to restore it to its former glory.”

The property sits on a site of 1.38 acres and has a guide price of £225,000-plus. The auction will be held in March 25-26.

It is believed to have been used as a ‘dowerhouse’ – a property used by the widow of an estate owner – by the De Salis family, who owned more than 500 acres of land in the parish by the mid-19th Century.

Mr Reed added: “The home has a fascinating story and represents an important chapter in not just the borough's history, but the country’s.

“It would be fantastic if a buyer with a passion for historical buildings could restore the property, to enable it to continue its life as a significant and recognisable landmark within the borough.”

John McDonnell, MP for Hayes and Harlington, said: “We all value a sense of community where we live and a sense of belonging. Part of that sense of community is about valuing our local heritage.”

Dower House is officially safe from demolition to make way for a third runway at Heathrow.
