RESIDENTS around where two rivers join south of Oswestry are being reminded that there is a flood alert for the area during Storm Dennis.

The Severn Vyrnwy confluence, near Melverley and Maesbrook, is currently high after being bombarded by more rain following on from Storm Ciara last weekend.

While Dennis has not dumped as much rain on the area, meaning the mid-week alert has receded, the Environment Agency is still expecting the water levels to remain high until Monday.

The last flood warning was posted on the government's website at 12.30pm on Saturday, and it said: "River levels are forecast to rise at the Llanymynech river gauge as a result of persistent heavy rainfall associated with Storm Dennis.

"Consequently, flooding of property roads and farmland is expected between 1am and 6pm tomorrow. Flooding is expected to affect low-lying land and roads adjacent to the river from the Welsh border at Llawnt to Shrawardine near Shrewsbury.

"Other locations that may be affected include Llanymynech, Maesbrook and Melverley.

"Minor roads between Maesbrook, Melverley and Pentre start to flood. Predicted peaks:- Llanymynech 4.0m to 4.5m Sunday morning. Further heavy rainfall is forecast over the next 30 hours.

"We expect river levels to remain high until February 17. Our incident response staff are checking defences. Please plan driving routes to avoid low lying roads near rivers, which may be flooded. This message will be updated by 5pm on Sunday, or as the situation changes."
