Celebrations marking the 75th anniversary for the Allied Victory in Europe can be joined by thousands across the UK in a celebratory live screening.

The Prime Minister has announced hundreds of veterans will take part in commemorations of Victory of Europe (VE) Day on May 8, as Second World War veterans and others will reunite at the various events in central London.

These events will be broadcasted straight from the Royal Albert Hall to specific cinemas including the Cineworld at Intu Watford and the Vue at Woodside Leisure Park.

Classical singer Katherine Jenkins will be hosting the broadcasted event and will be joined with the Military Wives Choirs, the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra, as well as veterans and other special guests.

Starting at Westminster Abbey, the day will begin with a service of thanksgiving with hundreds of veterans and representatives during the war era.

Then at 3pm, an extract of Sir Winston Churchill’s victory speech will be broadcasted, followed by archived personal testimonies from people who experienced the victory day.

At the Mall in Westminster, a flyover with the Red Arrows, Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and other modern aircrafts will take part before a veterans tea party at St James’s Park.

Culture Secretary and Hertsmere MP Oliver Dowden said: “The VE Day anniversary events will allow the nation to come together and celebrate the greatest generation which saved our nation from tyranny.

“Our nationwide programme will tell the stories of those who served in the Second World Ward at home and abroad, and honour their memories as we reflect on 75 years since the Allies restored peace in Europe.”

Boris Johnson is also backing the Royal British Legion’s search for anyone who contributed to the victory, so they can take stage at the event.

Catherine Davies, the head of Remembrance for the Royal British Legion, said: “We are inviting all those who contributed to victory in Europe who wish to attend these commemorations to enter the ballot.

“In addition to events taking place in London, it is equally as important for communities of all types across the UK to come together locally and put our Second World War generation at the heart of your events in recognition of their incredible achievements.”

Pub licensing hours will also be extended on the Bank Holiday until 1am on both May 8 and May 9.

Further details of the broadcasted event and timings will be announced at a later date.

Anyone who believes they should take part in the event for their contributions can apply online at rbl.org.uk/veday75.
