A community group has urged its council to stop “neglecting” its responsibilities after a fence collapsed into some of their gardens.

Residents of Neptune Road, Harrow, said they tried to bring several issues at an alleyway behind their street to the attention of Harrow Council.

It included concerns around fly-tipping and other forms of anti-social behaviour, as well as the state of a large fence that looked as if it might topple.

The fence subsequently collapsed into a couple of gardens following stormy weather and those living there believe this could have been avoided had the council acted sooner.

“Over the years, residents have endured a number of problems, including illegal fly-tipping, old lorries and cars being abandoned, unsightly graffiti, noise pollution, and an abandoned plot of land which is attracting strange people to the area, among others,” said Tarla Modha, of Neptune Road.

“[These] issues, especially that relating to the grey fence and alleyway require urgent attention.

“The council has a duty of care and responsibility towards its residents. The fact that the issues have been neglected and overlooked does not instil trust.”

She said the area was maintained during the 1990s but since the turn of the century has been ignored and turned into a “health and safety hazard” for those living nearby.

Harrow Council confirmed that it is housing land for which it is responsible. It said it is “surveying” the situation and aims to carry out any repairs “within a week’s time”.
