I’m sure it hasn’t escaped readers’ notice that the fatal accident in Market Street recently involving a bus came just two years after a previous fatality along the same road when a truck reversed over a pedestrian.

How many people have to be killed by motor vehicles along Market Street before action is taken to better protect the public? One death is bad enough, but two in the same vicinity is alarming. Market Street has to be one of the town’s busiest byways. Yet there isn’t a zebra crossing along its entire length. In the very least there should be one opposite Holy Rood Church, and another at the Cassio Road end wouldn’t go amiss.
If there is any silver lining to these tragedies it will be the installation of traffic calming to prevent this ever happening again and so their deaths are not in vain.
