Brent Council will spend an extra £6 million on an expansion programme at a primary school after work with previous contractors broke down.

Its cabinet agreed to supplement the budget for a project at Uxendon Manor Primary School, in Kenton.

It comes after the initial plan – which sought to develop a reception classroom, hall and main teaching block by February 2019 – stalled due to “contractor failure”.

The council terminated its relationship with Lakehouse Contracts Limited after the company failed to complete the works.

It subsequently could not reach an agreement with another contractor to finish the job, but it is in the process of finding a new contractor to complete the expansion, which will increase the overall budget by £6 million.

A council report noted there are plans in place, through a parent company guarantee relating to the Lakehouse contract, to try and recover funding worth £6.3 million.

However, it added that “caution is advised as regards the council’s ability to recover the totality of the estimated project costs” due to various legal factors.

Cllr Muhammed Butt, leader of Brent Council, said these new developments will allow the council to “deliver the school places [the borough] needs”.

He added that the process shows it is committed to “holding people to account on any work that it isn’t done”.
