THE COMMUNITY has rallied to donate food to one Basingstoke school that is still teaching this week.
Last week's announcement from the Prime Minister meant that the vast majority of children did not attend school from this Monday, with the exception of the children of 'key workers' and those on Education and Healthcare Plans.
That left around 20-30 pupils for Fairfields School, on Council Road, to look after.
Headteacher Kelly Dillon agreed to feed all children and staff members attending from this week, but after her usual supermarket couldn't guarantee delivery, she had to ask the community to step in and help-out.
They did not disappoint, with loaves of bread, milk, jam and cereal amongst the many items donated by members of the public.
Meanwhile, Waitrose sent a van with produce and Global Kitchen also helped out.
Miss Dillon said: "I'm really proud and overwhelmed with the support we have had from our families.
"We will see how the next few weeks go but at least we are going to be fed.
"Thank you so much to everybody who has helped us, it is absolutely amazing, so thank you Fairfields Community. They have really pulled together to feed us."
