Two people in Watford have spoken out to say Dominic Cummings should be sacked after he said he had "no regrets" about his lockdown trip to Durham.

In a press conference on Monday, Mr Cummings - Boris Johnson's chief adviser - defended a 260-mile trip from London to the north-east of England he made with his family during lockdown in March, explaining that he believes he behaved "reasonably".

As of 6pm, a recent Facebook poll on the Observer's page suggests 42 readers believe the chief aide breached lockdown rules, while 12 people believe Mr Cummings' trip was justified.

Mr Cummings admitted to travelling to County Durham on March 27 to self-isolate with his family after his wife fell ill, despite official guidelines warning against long-distance journeys.

He made the decision after discussions with his wife about factors including childcare arrangements and concerns around safety at their home.

Speaking in the Downing Street rose garden, Mr Cummings said everything was done within Government guidelines.

But one woman from Watford said Mr Cummings set a “bad precedent” by travelling to Durham.

She said: “I think he needed to do the responsible thing and follow his own guidelines and his own rules.

“I don’t think people are taking the lockdown rules seriously enough as it is and this just sets a bad precedent.

"I think he should be sacked, he’s not setting the example that he should be setting and other people have been in his position and have lost their jobs, so what’s so special about him?”

Mr Cummings also admitted going for a “short drive” - 30 miles to Barnard Castle- while recovering from suspected coronavirus in April, to test his eyesight before returning to work in London.

But Donovan Bush, from Watford, said he “didn’t buy the story” that Mr Cummings drove 30-miles to test his eyesight.

He said: “I think it’s a case of the politically elite having one set of rules for themselves while the rest of us have to observe all the measure that were set out by the Government. I think he should be sacked.

"In my opinion he clearly broke his own rules and I don’t buy the story that he took a drive for 30 miles to test his eyesight.

“If he wants people to take him seriously, he has got to re-think that.”

The Prime Minister has defended his advisor's actions, claiming Mr Cummings "acted responsibly, legally and with integrity”.
