The past few weeks have undoubtedly brought out the best in many people. Lots of us have signed up as volunteers, helped our neighbours and shown our NHS staff and key workers how much they are appreciated. Many charities have had to adapt and they are working harder than ever to help those most in need in Watford. We are working together to support their vital work by raising money at www.watfordcovidappeal.org and this website includes details of our community auction and raffle.

This sense of unity and care for one another will be vital in the months ahead. Things will never return to the way they were before. But I know that we will adapt to face the new challenges so that our businesses and town can prosper again. From June 15, many town centre shops will be opening again. A great deal of work is taking place to make sure that as more people return to our town centre, they will be able to do this safely with changes to some road layouts, new signage and marshals. Whilst things might look and feel a bit different, all of this is to make sure we can continue to keep our distance from others and stop the spread of the coronavirus.

I know that we have all missed being able to see family and friends in the usual ways over the past few months. Some of the restrictions are now easing but it is important to remember that this battle is not over. To protect the health of ourselves and those we love, we need to continue to follow the NHS advice about keeping a distance between ourselves and others and to wash our hands frequently. It is also important that as people enjoy our parks and open spaces they do this responsibly – keeping apart from others and not leaving litter for somebody else to deal with!

I know that these last few weeks have been difficult for everyone but our town has come together and helped those in need. Although the number of deaths and infections is falling, let us continue to work together to make sure that we beat this virus, help each another and support local businesses.
