Police are investigating a serious assault which happened in St Albans today.

Officers, including armed units, were called to Central Drive at around 12.45pm, after a man was seen running from a block of flats covered in blood.

Police have confirmed a man suffered serious injuries to his chest and hand - believed to be stab wounds. 

He has been taken to hospital but his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

One man aged in his 30s has been arrested on suspicion of GBH. 

Police say they are not seeking anyone else in connection with the incident and added that those involved are believed to be known to each other.

There has been a wide police cordon in place in Central Drive and Woodland Drive today with officers guarding entrances that lead into the crime scene.

Armed police and a police helicopter attended the scene immediately but had left by 2.30pm.

A witness claimed he saw armed police and more than 10 police vehicles  around a property at about 1.10pm.

Officers, including detectives, were at the scene carrying out door-to-door enquiries.

One resident told us that people rushed to give the injured man, aged in his 30s, first aid when he ran screaming from a property.

She said there was blood on the pavement and he had a gash on his arm.

A shopkeeper said at around 2.30pm that police had been at the scene "at least an hour" and he'd heard someone had been stabbed. 

Anyone who saw the assault or has any information is asked to contact police on 101 referencing incident 397 of June 25.
