WITH rugby league enduring an enforced break due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Warrington Wolves Charitable Foundation primary school's tournament has been contested virtually this year.

The Warrington Rugby 7s School Fire Service Cup is a popular fixture in the town's rugby league calendar, and for years has given youngsters the chance to play on the Halliwell Jones Stadium pitch before Wire games.

But the HJ has not hosted a match since March due to the Covid-19 outbreak, with all games to be behind closed doors initially when the Super League season resumes next month.

As a result, the comp was held virtually this year – with the winners decided by which school could collectively complete the most rugby related physical activities.

And Culcheth Community Primary School has been named as the 2020 champion, with Wolfie hitching a ride in a fire engine in order to deliver the trophy on Friday, June 26.

Warrington Guardian:

Foundation director Neil Kelly said: "It's nice that we can adapt the competition and continue to do some of our work with the schools.

"The pupils have game cards and they have to work on certain skills to perform individually – whether it's how many high balls they can catch in 30 seconds or jumping up and down off the floor.

"Teachers then count them up, so we're being trustworthy – but it's not just about the winning, it is about taking part."
