An academy is celebrating after one of its pupils secured a place at Oxbridge for the first time in its history.

Bushey Academy student Bhavini Patel achieved four A grades and will be heading to Oxford University's Lady Margaret Hall College, where she will study chemistry.

No student from Bushey Academy has ever gone on to study at Oxford or Cambridge until now.

Bhavini said: "I would like to thank all my teachers at the school who gave me great levels of support.

"I am thrilled to be the first student from the school going to either Oxford or Cambridge."

Bushey Academy principal Jon Hebblethwaite, who is stepping down from his role, said: "We are so proud of Bhavini. She is such a fantastic student and deserves to be recognised.

"She shows that with hard work and dedication, anything is possible. It has been a pleasure to work with her over the years and I wish her all the very best for the future.

Incoming principal, Dr Philip Hills, said: "Bhavini is a credit to her family, the school and its teachers.

"Bhavini is one of the most talented pupils in the country and she made the choice to stay at Bushey Academy for her A levels because she was confident that she would have the support of excellent teachers to help her to achieve her dreams.

"Her continuing success and the positive value-added of the school at A level have richly rewarded her decision.

"I am delighted that Bhavini has already accepted our invitation to come back and inspire the next generation of pupils to follow in her footsteps.

"She is a trailblazing young woman and an absolute star."

Dr Hills was confirmed as the new principal last month after the academy was taken over by a new trust, Future Academies.

When the new term begins, the academy will be known as The Grange Academy and students will wear a new uniform.
