WORK on removing an 11-metre-long “concreteberg” from an Ealing sewer, to prevent sewage overflowing, is underway.
The blockage, believed to be caused by someone accidentally pouring concrete down a drain, is being tackled by Thames Water.
Specialist drills are being used to break it up, while tankers and pumps collect the sewage that would normally be flowing through the pipe.
One lane of the B455 on the approach to Ealing Broadway has been closed, near to the junction with Mount Park Road, to allow the concrete to be removed safely. The job is expected to take around three weeks.
Customer manager Neil Levy said: “While lots of people know about the challenges we face with fatbergs blocking sewers, many don’t realise just how common concretebergs are, too.”
In June, Thames Water revealed it had recovered almost £3m in just 12 months after sewers, drains and water pipes were damaged by third-party work, including concrete blockages.
