Two year groups at a primary school are self-isolating after a confirmed case of Covid-19 "within the school community".

The head teacher at Clore Shalom School in Shenley said a decision to send home pupils followed consultations with public health officials at Hertfordshire County Council.

Karen Cohen told the Jewish Chronicle she had been notified of a "positive test result within our school community" and after talks with the council, the school was "instructed to tell pupils and teachers in two year groups to self isolate".

She added: "Fortunately this is a scenario we have worked hard to prepare for and had clear procedures in place in order to respond quickly.

"We have been getting all pupils used to using Google Classrooms since the start of term and both classes will continue to have a full programme of remote learning via the platform.

"While the pandemic continues, this is likely to be a common scenario played out in schools up and down the county and our main concern is for the mental and physical welfare of all our staff, pupils and their families."

The JC added a parent at Clore Shalom said the class involved were year four and five.

Last week, Hertswood Academy in Borehamwood confirmed in a letter to parents that a pupil had tested positive for Covid-19.

The letter explained the pupil had been away from school since September 8 after showing symptoms of the virus - but a positive test result was only received on September 21.

Parents who received letters on September 21 were told their child needed to self-isolate for a day before returning to school on September 23.

The letter said: "Confirmation of a positive test was only received today (September 21). Guidance is that close contacts should self-isolate for 14 days from the first sign of symptoms, i.e. from September 8 to 22."
