Hillingdon Women’s Centre are hosting a virtual winter concert at 4:30 this afternoon, showcasing work from an Ickenham based artist.

Suzanne Munro will be performing a selection of winter-themed poetry and music for the centre, which has been supporting women in the borough for over 35 years.

Munro approached the centre with the idea of the free concert to boost morale in Hillingdon and bring the wider community together.

Izzy Sutherland, Project Support for Hillingdon Women's Centre said: “We were so delighted to hear from Suzanne, to showcase her talent and share it with our service users and beyond.

“The concert is a feel-good piece that brings back those nice, warm, happy memories of things you have been able to do in previous years and still be grateful for them, even though they are not able to happen this year.”

Munro began playing the piano as a child, and later went on to study piano and composition at the London College of Music.

She has continued to teach the piano, composing piano and choral music.

She said: “I started to give these little on-line concerts of my piano music and poetry for people during the first lockdown, as a way to cheer people up.

“I thought it was nice, as they could also talk to me if they wished, as well as listen.“

Hillingdon Women’s Centre supports women in the borough that are experiencing problems relating to domestic abuse or housing, in addition to isolation, mental health problems and unemployment issues.

Sutherland said: “As far as we’re concerned, we are the only service of its kind in the local area.  We are inclusive of all women, regardless of their background.

“Because of this, we always strive to offer a holistic approach through sisterhood, friendship, empowerment, practical support and advice to enable women to reach their full potential”.

The centre recently launched a new website offering free classes including mother and baby yoga and poetry writing, for a collection celebrating the ‘International Day of the Elimination of Violence against Women’ in November.

The centre confirmed that there will also be more activities available which will be announced in the new year.

Sutherland added: “Hillingdon Women’s Centre is here for any woman in the borough. We are here to help and support you in the best possible way we can. So do get in touch.”

If you would like to sign up to watch the concert, you can sign up here.
