The new month began with a critical incident being declared at Watford General Hospital.

For much of April 4, only the maternity unit at the hospital was open to new patients with the rest of the site put on shutdown.

A critical incident was declared late in the morning because of an 'issue relating to the hospital's oxygen equipment'.

West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust, which runs Watford General, put a message out on its social media channels warning everyone to stay away from A&E.

The dreadful toll from the coronavrius pandemic continued to rise, with more than 250 deaths recorded at the trust by the end of the month.

A couple from St Albans were fined just £60 each after travelling 150 miles to have a day at the beach as some Brits ignored lockdown rules over the Easter Bank Holiday weekend.

The pair flouted the measures to make the 150-round trip from their home in Hertfordshire to Camber Sands in East Sussex.

The couple were fined as part of the police attempted to enforce the Covid-19 lockdown measures over the public holiday.

A company spokesperson said: "Sadly we have been unable to agree terms with the landlord in Borehamwood and as a result this store will not be reopening when government restrictions are lifted.
