A Liberal Democrat councillor in Bushey has resigned from his position.

Andrew Melville has stood down from his role as councillor in Bushey North, nearly two years after he was elected Hertsmere Borough Council for the first time.

Since being elected in May 2019, Mr Melville has campaigned against the idea of Watford building a new stadium at Bushey Hall Golf Club.

The Hertsmere Liberal Democrats say the outgoing councillor also helped introduce new eco-requirements for building developments, and led efforts to clamp down on an anti-social business operating in his ward.

Explaining why he was stepping down, the former Hertsmere Liberal Democrat leader said: "I will soon be moving away from the area to set up home with my partner in Worcestershire, so I cannot in good conscience continue to serve as a councillor for the wonderful ward of Bushey North, which has been my home for more than thirty years.

"I am sad to be leaving, but also very proud to have served this very special neighbourhood, with its unique community spirit."

Hillingdon Times:

Mr Melville was part of a trio of Lib Dem councillors elected to represent Bushey North in 2019 - the first time in 12 years a Lib Dem had been voted in by the public in Hertsmere.

Cllr Melville added: "My colleagues, Cllr Jerry Evans and Cllr Paul Richards, will take over my casework and continue their efforts in looking after the needs of residents. I'd like to extend my gratitude and best wishes to all the residents of north Bushey, whom it's been such a privilege to represent."

Mr Melville said he chose to resign now to ensure his seat can be filled when elections take place on May 6.

His exit means there are now two vacancies at Hertsmere Borough Council, following the death of Borehamwood Kenilworth Conservative councillor Cynthia Barker in September.

Residents in Bushey North and Borehamwood Kenilworth will be able to elect their new councillor on May 6, although a by-election will need to be triggered first in Bushey North.

In Hertsmere, Hertfordshire County Council elections will also be taking place on this day, as well as elections to fill vacant seats on Aldenham Parish Council, Shenley Parish Council, and South Mimms Parish Council.

All by-elections were put on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic.
