Some television viewers were left bemused this morning after spotting what they believed to be a "big cat" wandering along the shores of a lake.

Good Morning Britain presenter Andi Peters was filming live at Rickmansworth Aquadrome today when a black animal was spotted passing in the background.

The animal went unnoticed by Peters and the ITV studio presenters at the time but eagle-eyed viewers took to social media to question GMB on what they saw.

The camera had been zooming in on a swan bobbing along the water when just to the right, a mystery animal, which initially appeared to be hiding behind a tree, began making its way out of shot with its nose to the ground.

People began speculating what animal it was with one person writing: "Looks like a big cat to me. A Black Leopard or Jaguar. Its movement is so much like one of those", while another said: "Defo big cat and in the same roam of the previous sightings".

The speculation prompted GMB director Erron Gordon to take another look at the clip on the lake.

He later tweeted: "So myself and two of our fab @GMB team @CameronDLWalker & @xemilymulliganx had a look at this post show in the newsroom and I’m certain it’s a dog, Emily and Cameron think otherwise #ItsADog".

Mirror video journalist Matt Capon had posted a clip online, slowed down.

Peters addressed the 'cat' sighting later on in the show saying: "I have some breaking news of my own. Earlier today we were in this very spot on Bury Lake in Hertfordshire, viewers said that whilst I was doing the competition they spotted a black shaped creature on the banks, that then walked off.

"We have had a look for you guys, we have looked around, we can’t see anything but obviously you all spotted something on the shores. Could it have been someone walking a dog, the word "wolf" has been used. I cannot confirm or deny."

He later joked: "This is the stuff that Countryfile would love. You don’t get this on Countryfile. Viewers that saw something don’t worry, I am safe. My entire crew is safe and we will continue to look in case it is a wolf or a wolf-like creature."
